Author, entrepreneur, and speaker Seth Godin wrote a book called Unleashing the IdeaVirus back in 2001. His first stroke of genius was the actual content of the book: viral marketing. IdeaVirus explains the trend away from interruption marketing and toward creating an idea that spreads itself through word of mouth. Godin had wrapped his head around a concept businesses are still trying to master 10 years later. His second stroke of genius? Actually using the principles in the book to market it.

Seth offered Unleashing the IdeaVirus as a free eBook. His plan was that the book would become a viral download, building his reputation, and allowing him to sell his other books to a larger and more interested market. He even sells a physical copy of IdeaVirus and my guess is he sells quite a few of them.
