I remember the first time I ever heard of Tony Robbins. I was eleven years old and my godfather- Greg Writer was popping Tony’s inspiring tapes into the tape deck of his Subaru.
It was always the road trips to go hanggliding or to the beach that were great. The longer the ride, the smarter we got. (or the more confused. Either way something was happening.)
I always loved it because as his family would enter the car, Greg would start the tape (Tapes!? What are those!?) like he was loading Nugent or one of his other favorite 80′s bands.
All the family would just sigh and roll their eyes…like “here we go again, you know Dad and his motivational tapes!” It was in his blood, he was dedicated to working on himself and he made the habit long before.
It was because of Greg that I started to listen to and read personal development products and books.
It wasn’t until I was about 13 or 14 when I got my first Tony Robbins product- entitled: Personal Power. I don’t think I took it out of the plastic for about 12 months. I knew it possessed something spectacular, but part of just owning it was gratifying and I think the other part of me was scared of what it might stir up.
When I finally cracked into the cd’s, It was life changing…midway through the first cd I was completely hooked. I can say that at 15 and 16 the concepts were a lot to grasp, but with all the crazy change going on in my life at that time, I was growing up pretty quick.
Tony’s core concepts became staples in my life and even to this day I can say that I have been able to share them with others and pay it forward.
This was were it all started for me and my library has been growing ever since. I’m still learning…Tony says: “If you’re not green and growing, you’re dead and dying.”
A few years ago, I attended my first ever live Tony Robbins event with Greg and as we walked on fire together, met and talked with Tony together…it was amazing to have it all come full circle. What had started when I was just 11 was still continuing 15 years later.
I encourage you to be open to personal development and learn from thought leaders as if they are your personal mentors. I attribute everything that I have today to being present, open to possibility, shifting perception to create reality and understanding that hard work + personal growth + more hard work =’s Success.
Just as Tony says: “Your life is in direct proportion to the amount of uncertainty that you can comfortably live with.”
Go make yourself,
Matthew
